There Are Many Different Ways To Junk A Car

By Martha Harris

One would be forgiven for thinking that abandoned cars are some form of bizarre decoration scheme along the highways and in the suburbs. They are everywhere and in many cases they pose a danger to children and animals. Many people do not realize that ownership of even an abandoned vehicle still remains the responsibility of the registered owner and these owners remain liable for anything that concerns such abandoned cars. There are better and legal ways in which to junk a car.

It is not possible to dispose of unwanted cars without having the title deed and other legal documentation at hand. If the title deed is lost, the original owner will have to apply for a copy before disposing of the vehicle. It does not matter whether the unwanted vehicle is still in a running condition or if it is a total wreck. The last registered owner of any vehicle will always be held liable and responsible for that vehicle.

One of the easiest ways in which to get rid of such cars is to sell them to junkyards. As long as the paperwork is in order, this can be done quickly. The drawback is that junkyards will never offer much for unwanted cars, even if they are still running. It may be a good idea to approach several potential buyers before making a final deal.

More money can be made by selling the parts and accessories of an unwanted vehicle piece by piece. Even total write offs have parts that still work and accessories that may be valuable. This will take longer and it may require some mechanical skill, but it will definitely earn much more cash than simply selling the whole vehicle.

Many people sell their unwanted cars to junkyards for ridiculously low prices. Junkyards often make very basic repairs to cars that are still in running order and then sell them at a huge profit. It is therefore worthwhile to find out what it will cost to make repairs to such an unwanted car before perhaps selling it as a running vehicle.

In certain cases there is a really good market in selling an unwanted vehicle to people that enjoy building up scrap cars, sometimes for selling at a profit. There are also numerous other people that have mechanical aptitude but no money to buy a car in roadworthy condition. To such people, a car still in running condition but in need of some loving attention is often a godsend.

In some cases the owners of unwanted cars are not really interested in cash. They just want to get rid of it. There are interesting solutions. These cars can be turned into safe playground toys. Artists have used them very creatively. They can even be used to create safe havens for fish in certain areas. Schools teaching mechanics may also be grateful for a donation.

It is irresponsible to simply abandon unwanted cars. It is also illegal to do so and these cars pose a health risk, especially when abandoned in housing estates. The right thing to do is to follow the rules and to make a little bit of money in the process.
