Facts About Unmanned Surface Vessel Manufacturers

By Shirley Stevens

The other name given to unmanned surface vessels (USV) is autonomous surface vessels (ASV). These are floating kind of platforms that allow human to operate without their presence on board. It was during the Second World War when the issue of unmanned vessels began and researchers started working on it after the war. Technological developments and user needs have gone hand-in-hand with this idea advancing. Today, the number of unmanned surface vessel manufacturers is very high.

USVs are currently not only being used in military applications but in the field of science too. Currently, drones can be owned by anyone since there are no set rules for ownership. These vessels are used in science to carry out various research and scientific operations. Modern day vessels not only provide its users with improved safety and comfort but they are also multi-functional.

With ASV, it is possible to explore water bodies with a 100 percent level of safety. They can be taken into water bodies that would otherwise cause health problems to human beings or animals. Also, since they are machines, they do not need to rest and they cannot refuse to do their job like is usually the case with humans in some cases.

The use of these vessels currently is more for scientific applications despite being developed for military applications. Most models being built today are made to be resourceful for use in marine operations. USVs have modernized how water bodies are being exploited. One of the main tasks they play in marine applications is oceanographic measurements.

Oceanographic measurements are comprised of very many operations, including bathymetry, currents, ship wreck survey, water monitoring, chemistry, earthquake prediction, hydrographic data, structure inspection, and salinity measurement. Atmospheric and air measurement operations are also done using USVs. These measurements include measuring surface winds, humidity, temperature, and sea surface temperature. It is also possible to use these vessels to predict the path of a hurricane before it happens.

USVs are also used to perform forecast weather missions in water. USVs are also used by the military widely around the globe for various operations and weather forecasting. Some major uses of USVs in the military include coastal surveillance, reconnaissance, military security and training, mine detection, and mine-hunting. USVs are used in many cases by the military to accompany underwater vessels like a submarine. Offering navigation, precision location and communication support is the work of the USV in cases where they accompany submarines.

There are a number of improvements that are currently being carried out on these devices. There are various features that manufacturers are adding to these devices in order to make them more efficient. The efficiency of these vessels and the safety passengers is being improved through major developments being carried out in the hull shape.

The SWATH concept has come up strongly and helped vessels that need static behavior and speed while at the sea. Vessels are being made more capable and stable to be able to survive harsh conditions in water by the concept of SWATH. Militaries and researchers also have improved capability to do their work because of SWATH. Better models of these vessels are expected to be developed in the future.
