Steps On How Street Rod Frames Are Built

By Carl Brooks

A street rod is one type of car in which the purpose of manufacturing is to increase the old performances of hot rod types. This is also not using a cadillac engine in order to have a faster speed and outperform the hot rods. During the manufacturing of it which is made by the automakers, safety and efficiency of fuel is considered more importantly than performance.

The processes which are involved in the structures of buildings is very similar when framing the cars. So this article is written to be able to provide you with the steps on how street rod frames are being built. Air tools, steel tubing or frame, and sand blaster are the 3 primary tools and materials needed. If you are really determined on doing this process, you are required to have a basis understanding on mechanical things and as well as hand tools.

There are a lot of companies that are offering a complete package of chassis in which you can assemble. You may use a rusty chassis from old cars and if you have this already, it would be easy for you to perform the next steps. But before, you must first have to decide on what type of rod you will be making. Generic frames or any other bodies can be used if ever you have a low budget.

Once you already have decided on a rod type, prepare the steel tubing or the frame. If you are using generic frames, it will take you longer on doing the modification of it. The unused mounts and unused brackets must be cut off. The front suspension and as well as the assembly of the rear axle must be disassembled. Measuring all of the sides must be done to ensure that it is square.

If you may happen to see or notice some weak points, weld it immediately. It is also important to weld the front and rear cross members. Mostly, the builders would prefer on boxing all kinds of frames. The term boxing means welding the flat steel plate. The plate is the length of the entire frame on opening edges inside. Boxing is not needed for a steel tubing in a rectangular type.

If you want to have a front suspension that work really well, you may purchase a kit for front suspension. After deciding for the suspension, mount it under front cross members in a suicide style. The suicide style is being used for lowering more the car. The steering box will turn the arm of pitman that will also push the rod of tie back and forth. The box should be properly mounted with correct angles.

The installation of rear suspension is easy. For holding the suspension in its position, springs or any other materials are needed. Leaf springs are commonly used types but are not that effective especially for small sized and old vehicles.

If the four wheels are already installed on the chassis, start fitting the cars body then sorting out the position of sitting. The engine will be mounted after. Mounts have different types and the most common is the side pedestal. A front cradle is also used but it may need support from the center. Bolted cross members are needed for the transmission.

After the engine has been mounted, focus now on the details of brake, clutch pedal, and gas. Decide if these are to be mounted on firewalls or under the floor boards. If these will be mounted under, the frame brackets should be welded.
